WARGAME WITH DIE-CUT COUNTERS : Hamilcar Imperator

Hamilcar Imperator - The mercenary war - 240 to 238 BC

At the end of the First Punic War, Carthage abandoned Sicily to the legions. Magnanimous Rome lets the Punic garrisons guarding the last strongholds leave. Among them were Hamilcar Barca, father of the famous Hannibal, and above all thousands of Celtic, Greek and Iberian mercenaries.

Disembarked in Africa, the soldiers demanded their back pay and became restless. The Libyans, vassals of the Punic tribes, quickly realised that their tribute would have to be increased to pay the mercenaries what they owed them. So they make a daring gamble: they arm themselves, ally themselves with the Numidians, pay their gold to the mercenaries and propose to the whole assembled troop that they march on Carthage!

The player will have to put down this revolt, which will quickly turn into an inexpiable war if he doesn't manage to put a stop to it! To do this, he will have to deal with several Punic generals who don't get on and whose hubris is monitored by the suffetes. Fortunately, his war elephants will literally help him crush the rebels.

Optional rules allow you to play Gustave Flaubert's Salammbô or simulate flaming pigs.
